WHAT IS BLACK AND WHITE THINKING

Black and white thinking, is all-or-nothing thinking. It is a cognitive distortion characterized by the tendency to perceive the world in extremes or polarities.

In black and white thinking, situations, people, or concepts are viewed as either entirely good or entirely bad, with no room for shades of gray.

People who suffer with “black and white” personality traits see themselves as right, good, and superior and see others as wrong, bad, and inferior. They think in absolutes: good or bad, success or failure, perfect or imperfect.

When you see people as all good or all bad it means you are not seeing them for who they are; a normal, fallible human just like you. Thinking something is all good or all bad without a middle ground is a cognitive distortion. These extremes can make it difficult for you to forgive others, complete your work, have peaceful relationships, and it can negatively affect your physical and emotional health.

There are several mental health conditions associated with this personality trait like anxiety depression, border line personality, narcissistic personality disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. It could be learned habit from a narcissist parent or a habit we repeat in response to stress. It can be very common with those who suffer from PTSD.

KEY FEATURES OF BLACK AND WHITE THINKING

Seeing situations in absolutes, such as "always" or "never," without considering the possibility of exceptions or variability.

Dividing people, experiences, into categories of "right" or "wrong," "good" or "bad," with little recognition of complexity or context.

Drawing conclusions based on limited evidence without considering alternative viewpoints.

Holding oneself or others to unrealistic standards of perfection, where anything less than perfection is deemed a failure or inadequacy.

Clinging to fixed beliefs without openness to new perspectives.

Viewing situations or people as either entirely positive or entirely negative, with little recognition of the coexistence of both positive and negative elements.

Allowing emotions to dictate perceptions and judgments.

Black and white thinking cuts you off from the richness of life. You internalize every failure and have an unrealistic expectation of every success. You become hypersensitive to others’ opinions and make it difficult to accept criticism without deep insecurity.

Narcissism is an exaggerated, excessive interest in oneself where you switch between thinking you are always right to being the world’s biggest failure as opposed to seeing life the way it is, complex, uncertain, and full of change.

HOW TO ESCAPE THE CONFINES OF BLACK AND WHITE THINKING

Instead of saying “always” and “never” change it too "maybe" and "sometimes".

Write that grey list

Question your thought patterns!-Do you have proof?Make a positive list of other possibilities

Learn acceptance, its ok to say I don’t know the answer.

Practice mindfulness and present moment awareness to observe your thoughts and reactions without judgement.

Pay attention to your thought patterns and identifying instances of black and white thinking and challenge yourself to explore the shades of gray in between.

Ask yourself why you see things in such absolute terms and whether there might be alternative perspectives or explanations worth considering.

Look for the complexities, contradictions, and gray areas that exist in most aspects of life, and resist the urge to oversimplify or categorize things into black and white.

Practice empathy and understanding towards others by considering their perspectives.

Learn to tolerate uncertainty in your life. Accept that not everything has a clear-cut answer or resolution, and be comfortable with the discomfort of not knowing or having all the answers.

While black and white thinking can provide a sense of certainty and clarity in certain situations overall it can hinders your relationships, and your personal development.

Once you start to recognize and challenge this type of thinking you will become a lot more balanced and make better decisions.

By incorporating these approaches into your mindset and behavior, you can gradually escape the confines of black and white thinking and embrace a more, open-minded, and enriching perspective on life.

CONCLUSION

It's important to cultivate a mindset that embraces openness to diverse perspectives, rather than succumbing to the limitations of black and white thinking. This approach promotes understanding, empathy, and healthier relationships and a more fulfilling life.

Ultimately, by challenging black and white thinking, we create space for creativity, compassion, and personal transformation, leading to a more fulfilling and authentic life.
